Hospital & In-Patient Services
Hospital or inpatient physiotherapy refers to physiotherapy services for patients who are admitted to a hospital. This specialised form of physiotherapy is designed to address the unique needs and challenges of individuals who are receiving medical care as inpatients.

Key Types of In-Patient Physiotherapy Treatment
Post operative care: We work closely with patients recovering from spinal, shoulder and other orthopaedic procedures. Our physiotherapy approach consists of bed exercises, initiating early and specific orthopaedic rehabilitation, assisting with walking and regaining mobility, preventing surgical complications, and patient education. This comprehensive strategy is designed to accelerate the healing process, ultimately facilitating a timely discharge from the hospital.
Mobility and functional independence: We provide exercises to improve muscle strength, joint flexibility, and overall mobility, facilitating a faster and safer return to daily activities.
Respiratory Care: Patients in hospital, particularly those with respiratory conditions or following surgeries, may experience challenges with breathing and lung function. Physiotherapists employ techniques such as breathing exercises, chest physiotherapy, and lung clearance manoeuvres to optimise lung function and prevent complications like pneumonia.
Neurological Rehabilitation: In cases of neurological conditions, such as strokes or spinal cord injuries, inpatient physiotherapy plays a crucial role in promoting neurological recovery. Our therapists work on improving motor skills, balance, coordination, and mobility to enhance the patient’s independence.
Cardiac Rehabilitation: Physiotherapists contribute to the cardiac care team in providing rehabilitation services for individuals with heart-related conditions. Cardiac rehabilitation may include exercises to improve cardiovascular fitness, breathing exercises, and lifestyle modifications.
Prevention of Complications: Physiotherapists actively work on preventing complications associated with immobility, such as pressure ulcers, joint contractures, muscle atrophy and pneumonia. Regular assessment and early intervention contribute to reducing the risk of secondary health issues.
Patient Education: Physiotherapists educate patients and their caregivers on the importance of physical activity, proper body mechanics, and self-care techniques. Empowering patients with knowledge helps them actively participate in their rehabilitation and promotes long-term health.
Coordination with the Medical Team: Physiotherapists work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive care plan.

Physiotherapy is often automatically integrated into your hospital care plan. However, you can also request physiotherapy services if you believe it would benefit your recovery. Your healthcare team will assess and coordinate with physiotherapists as needed.
Hospital-based physiotherapy is provided to people admitted to the hospital, often following surgeries, medical procedures, or for acute medical conditions. It involves targeted rehabilitation to address immediate recovery needs. Outpatient physiotherapy, on the other hand, is for individuals not requiring hospitalisation and takes place in a private in a physiotherapy practice.
Prior to being discharged you will be assessed on whether you will need ongoing physiotherapy. If you do need continued physio, your physio will arrange for you to be seen as an outpatient at the physiotherapy practice.
