Lymphoedema Management

What is Lymphoedema?
“Lymphoedema is a chronic swelling, usually of a limb, caused by lymphatic failure either due to a congenital abnormality or damage to the lymphatic system.” — British Lymphology Society, 2007

“Lymphoedema is a progressive chronic condition that affects a significant number of people and can have deleterious effects on both physical and psychosocial health.” — Lymphoedema Framework, 2006

Types of Lymphoedema

  1. Primary Lymphoedema
Caused by genetic or congenital abnormalities affecting the development of the lymphatic system. Often associated with syndromic conditions.
  2. Secondary Lymphoedema
Develops as a result of damage to a previously normal lymphatic system. Common causes include:
  • Cancer and cancer treatments (radiation, surgery)
  • Trauma or injury
  • Immobility or obesity
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Infections or inflammatory conditions
  • Hormonal or endocrine disorders

How Is Lymphoedema Managed?

Effective management aims to reduce swelling, improve function, and prevent complications. Treatment is individualized and may include:

  • Patient education & skincare: Preventing infections and promoting skin health
  • Rehabilitation: Gentle exercises, movement, and limb elevation to promote drainage
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized massage technique to stimulate lymph flow
  • Multi-layer Lymphoedema Bandaging (MLLB): Helps reduce swelling and prepare the limb for compression garments
  • Compression garments: Custom-fitted sleeves or stockings to maintain reduction and prevent recurrence
